WATER SAFETY

SUE’S LITTLE FISH SWIM SCHOOL

Most of our lessons have some element of water safety activities, many lessons are planned around water safety. Children learn the 4 key water safety messages and we practice ‘falling in’ and floating on their back with as much or as little support as they need. We regularly ask swimmers to wear extra clothing in the water and do all water safety skills without hats & goggles to replicate what it would be like if they ever did fall into water. All our activities are fun based. Our swimmers love water safety activities!

STOP & THINK

A moment to pause before running/jumping in – can you spot any dangers?, Do you know what the tide is doing? How deep is it? How cold it is? Can you climb back out? Do you have the right kit? Who would help you if you got into trouble? Can you visit a lifeguarded beach & swim between the red & yellow flags?

STAY TOGETHER

Stay close to your adult. When you’re old enough to be out without an adult stay with a friend.

FLOAT

If you fall into water unexpectedly, lie back & float, breath & relax. If you can swim to safety try, if you need to rest then float again to breath.

CALL 999

If you see someone in trouble, call 999. (Don’t go into the water yourself, talk to them, pass them something to help them float).

ADDITIONAL WATER SAFTEY RESOURCES

Talking about water safety at home consolidates what we do in our lessons and allows for further discussion we don’t have time for during a short lesson.

Here’s some conversation starters, but also visit the RNLI Education Resources page for more information.
